St. Francis of Assisi was a 13th century saint whose story is well known. He lived a life of simplicity, poverty, preaching, and obedience to Christ’s commands. The artist is depicted as St. Francis (left); Leo was his favorite disciple and recorder. Early in Francis’ life, he and his disciples lived in the woods in central Italy.
